Two New Trojans Attack Mac OS X

Last week, I read about security hole in Apple Remote Desktop Agent (ARDAgent) that could be worn to undertake AppleScript with root privilege  in Mac OS X. This security hole it was considered critical and could be used to control computer victim remotely.

I just received the opportunity to try this security hole in MacBook belong to my friend, and apparently this security hole was serious enough because of could be exploited easily. To see whether your Mac was affected with this weakness, you were enough to type “osascript -e ‘tell app “ARDAgent” to do shell script “whoami”‘;” in terminal.

Those syntax above ordered ARDAgent to undertake to run “whoami” that returned “root”, proof that the script above was undertaken with the root account. And currently, F-secure reported the existence of two trojan just that exploited this, it is Backdoor.Mac.Hovdy.a and Trojan-PSW: OSX/PokerStealer.A. Trojan PokerStealer sent username, password and the IP address computer victim, that opened the possibility for the aggressor to control your computer remotely.

When this article was written, official patch from Apple to this security hole was still not available. Most Mac users (including my friend) did not know  the prevention manner from trojan, because trojan was very rare found in Mac. For the temporary prevention, you could carry out two preventions like that was explained in Slashdot and Washington Post.

Secure Your System with Encryption

What does encryption for me ?. Encryption and cryptographic software was developed in many different ways to systems. This article deals only a few ways that this software can secure your system, including: e-mail encryption and file encryption.

Among the programmes mentioned that will help encrypt information. There are many other programs that will help, but these programs are good and a good place to start as any. You have the added benefit of both being free with source code.

If encryption stop people from access to my data ?. Encryption simply makes it more difficcult for people to have access to important information such as passwords or sensitive information in a file. The first thing you should know about encryption is that the algorithm is used to encrypt can be simple or complex and that affects how sure what you have is encrypted. Encryption systems have been broken, as the method of encryption is to hackers and easy to break.

Why bother to my e-mails encrypt ?. It should be noted that e-mail address is far less secure than paper mail for two very good reasons: First, electronic data can be easily accessed via an Internet and secondly, the electronic exchange of data is really easy to copy. It is a very good chance that someone has snooped around in your e-mail despite your best intentions to stop.

How can I learn about my e-mail encryption ?. There are many programs that can help to encrypt your e-mail. A very popular is PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) or its offshoot Gnu CPC.

PGP describes itself as: This “is a program that your e-mail something that otherwise would not have: Privacy. He does this by your mail encryption, so that nobody but the intended person can read it. If encrypted, the message looks like a meaningless jumble of random characters. PGP has been quite capable of resisting even the most modern forms of analysis for the reading of the encrypted text. “

Why bother to encrypt my files ?. The answer to this question is to what you store on your computer. If you have financial data with important information such as Social Security numbers, e-mail addresses, account numbers and passwords, then open up to losing very valuable information. Most corporate Internet security employees testify to the widespread theft of very valuable information. As long as you are connected to the Internet you are vulnerable.

How can I find out about my files encrypt ?. AxCrypt File Encryption Software Self-described as “free personal privacy and data security for Windows 98/ME/NT/2K/XP with AES-128 File Encryption, Compression and transparent and open decipher in the original application.”
