Intel’s Cliffside Change Laptops Become Smart AP

Connect your laptop to an access point (AP) WiFi is an easy job. But how do you connect your computer to a variety of other tools such as wireless cameras and printers? To answer this question, Intel has developed the technology Cliffside to change your computer into the AP-based software.

You may think that the “software-based AP have been there a long time,” but the Intel product manager Ashish Gupta reported that the Cliffside not only create an AP-based software.

This technology combines the ease of use, such as Bluetooth with the speed and security of WiFi. Computers that use the Cliffside will create a personal area network (PAN) to connect several devices at once, such as wireless bluetooth.

Laptops will detect the tools that exist in surrounding areas and a window will appear, asking the user to accept or reject the connection of these tools.

How do with security? Gupta said that Cliffside will use any security technology available, such as WEP or WPA, but will be working with the technology that supported all the tools. For example, if your laptop uses WEP, but your camera does not support it, they will not be able to connect.”

Gupta taking a photo at the Intel Developer Forum Shanghai, and then wirelessly send photos to the laptop, which is located nearby. He then print the photos in a Lexmark wireless printer which is located next to the laptop. All equipment was connected to a laptop through the application Cliffside ‘Central Point’.
